I'm guessing the guy mistaking the girl for her father's mistress is a bigger, more drawn out affair in the original novel, because here the misunderstanding lasted a day or two before it was cleared up (and the leads barely interacted during that time), yet the leads still keep talking about it like it was a big deal. The story instead focuses on the girl's interactions and growing relationships with her new family and the guy, with the romance often taking a back seat to the family drama. Poor girl has to juggle her dad's extreme affection due to over-compensating for lost time, her step-mother's antagonistic attitude towards her owing to a very strained marriage to an emotionally distant husband, and her growing feelings for the guy, all while trying to cope with her own grief over her mother death's and her grandfather's subsequent poor health. The story spends so much time (rightfully) fleshing out these issues, but that leaves the ending feeling abrupt and premature. Still great!
