Sensei's Career & Creation Process
Released: Oct. 31, 2025
Please introduce yourself in any way you'd like, with any information you'd like to include!

Hi, everyone. I'm Nobiru Hoshi. While I've been creating manga since 2022, I fully committed to becoming a mangaka just last year. Nowadays, I'm busy working on my series. I like tops who are a bit pushy, and I enjoy BL stories that might start out a bit dark but come to a happy ending.

Did you have any other jobs previously? If so, how did that lead to becoming a mangaka? If not, how did you get started on your mangaka career?

I used to work in design and illustration, where I learned the importance of knowing my audience and catering to what they might enjoy seeing.
When I realized how cool ikemen are, I didn't have a way to incorporate them into my work at the time, so I practiced drawing them on my own.
I posted my drawings of cute guys and short manga on my X account in the hopes of making the viewers' hearts throb, and it caught my current editor's attention. That's where I Want to Spoil You all started!
Do you have any background in art? If not, how did you learn to draw?

I've loved drawing since I was a child, and when I was in high school, I bought a pen tablet and became completely absorbed in digital illustration.
After deciding to pursue art professionally, I attended a drawing class for a year to learn techniques of depicting objects realistically.
In digital art, I gradually developed my own style over a long period of time by observing and imitating the expressions I admired in the works of artists I liked.
What advice do you have for those looking to improve their artistic skills?

I'm still learning myself, but I think it's important to start by gathering reference materials and photos for your subject—don't just draw from imagination. Even for a single pose, try striking it yourself and maybe even wearing the same clothes as your character to observe them closely; this will add a sense of realism to your artwork.
I also recommend using reference materials on the human skeleton and muscular system. I found Stonehouse Anatomy Note particularly helpful for my studies.
In addition, if you seriously draw 3 to 5 illustrations with the intention of selling them as products, you'll naturally start to consider your target audience, the intended use, and what emotions you want to evoke in viewers while drawing. This will also help develop various skills like expressiveness and composition.
What's your favorite part of the creation process?

In terms of manga creation, it's the inking stage. During the storyboard stage, I only sketch in rough outlines without drawing expressions or poses in detail, so I get nervous wondering if I'll be able to draw them well when I start the inking process.
When I manage to create artwork I'm satisfied with, I feel relieved, thinking “Phew...” and sometimes get excited seeing my own characters.
Could you tell us about what the relationship between a mangaka and their editor is like? Many of our readers are curious about the industry.

An editor acts as a guide, leading the way when mangaka run into obstacles.
I feel supported by my editor since they appreciate my work like a fan, but are also receptive to my ideas.
When I get stuck on the plot, they give me objective feedback and ideas to make the story even cuter and more exciting. When I feel down, they listen to me and give me the words of confidence I need to continue.
Regarding the scene in Chapter 3 where Reiji takes Wataru to a fancy restaurant, my editor actually took me out to one in real life. They even gifted me a rose right before we parted ways...! That was my first time meeting them in person, and I thought they might actually be a supadari top, haha.
There've also been times where they'd tell me about their faves, and they'd end up becoming my faves as well, to the point that we'd go to collab cafes together. I am so thankful to my editor who supports me in both work-related and personal matters.

What tools (hardware or software) do you use to create manga?

From rough sketches to the finishing touches, everything is done in CLIP STUDIO PAINT EX.
Do you like to do anything while you work, like listen to music? If not, what's the key to keeping yourself focused?

I've always been a fan of reality dating shows, but lately, I've been into reality TV featuring startup businesses.
When I'm obsessed with a series, I'll have it playing in the background over and over throughout the week. I enjoy seeing people's realistic expressions, which allows me to be in their shoes. Analyzing what makes me feel for the people in TV shows helps me with character building.
Also, sometimes I work on Discord with other artists while sharing my screen. The fact that someone's watching me as I work gives me a nice push and keeps me focused.
Your debut work, I Want to Spoil You, has already garnered much attention both in Japan and overseas. What was your reaction to the overwhelming love for the series?

I can't believe there are fans overseas... It doesn't feel real just yet! But, getting replies on X and seeing reviews in different languages makes me realize that the love for BL is universal. If I could, I'd like to thank them by shaking their hands! I'm so grateful for everyone who's helped me get to the point I'm at today.
What about your manga do you hope will leave the strongest impression on your readers?

"The top is so handsome!" and "The bottom is just too cute!" are the two things I want my readers to feel the most.
While Reiji might seem like he always plays it cool and can be slightly pushy, it's because he is actually full of love for Wataru.
In response to that, Wataru grows little by little throughout the story. I hope readers see my characters as people they can't help but root for!
